Books read in 2021

Hi guys, I’m big into looking back and reflecting, as I’m sure you’ve noticed. I wanted to compile a glimpse of what me and Tonio read this year. In addition to these books, we also read the Bible, and Tonio read A. WHOLE. LOT. of articles and commentaries in preparation for teaching on Sunday mornings. Enjoy!

LINDSEY READ the following:

1) The Voyage of the Dawn Treader by C.S. Lewis // The imagery and adventure is enticing!

2) The Silver Chair by C.S. Lewis // I think this was my favorite of all the 7 books.

3) The Last Battle by C.S. Lewis // So proud of myself for finishing the whole series!

4) Glad News! God Loves You My Muslim Friend by Samy Tanagho I have lots of Muslim friends here in Nice, and I loved all the truth in this book. It’s hard to get through as it’s more of an apologetics book with TONS of scripture. Super informative.

5) The Next Right Thing by Emily P. Freeman // You’ve heard me mention her a lot. I finally read her book, and I’m so glad I did. I also bought her yearly journal (it’s so good, filled with prompts…I used to like blank journal pages, but not anymore after this amazing journal!) Her podcast is my Tuesday companion as well.

6) Jésus et Mahomet by Mark A. Gabriel PhD // Another attempt to better understand my Muslim friends and their beliefs and my beliefs. I read this in French, which was a huge feat. It exists in English, and I HIGHLY recommend it if you want to see the similarities and differences between Christianity and Islam.

7) The Lazy Genius Way by Kendra Adachi // I read this while on vacation in California, then left it with my mama to read. This gal Kendra has a podcast too, and she has an incredible gift to create systems and steps that work for YOU based on what matters to YOU. So good.

8) Every Moment Holy, Volume 1 by Douglas Kaine McKelvey // A book of prayers that created such a rich time for me of being thankful and finding the Lord in every moment, even if I was reading a prayer about being a bee keeper or a medical worker, of which I am neither. It has prayers for almost any situation. It’s one I will refer back to often. I can’t wait to read volume 2.

9) Becoming Us by Beth and Jeff McCord // This book combines the enneagram, the Good News of Jesus and marriage. I am a certified enneagram coach through their program, and I just love how their motto is, “The enneagram reveals our need for Jesus, not our need to work harder. It’s the gospel of Jesus Christ that transforms us.”

10) Liturgy of the Ordinary: Sacred Practices for Everyday Life by Tish Harrison Warren // I think of all the books I read this year, apart from the Bible, this one gave me such a refreshing perspective on what it looks like to be a human who loves Jesus in everyday life. I highly recommend it!

11) The Practice of the Presence of God by Brother Lawrence // I had read this while in university ages ago. It was a good refresher to re-read it.

12) A Tale of Three Kings by Gene Edwards // Similar to the above book, I read this one way back in university 20 years ago (crazy!). It is such an incredible comparison of 3 kings in the Bible and how we can end up turning into one or the other depending on our choices: Saul, David or Absalom. Such a good (and very quick) read.

13) For the Love by Jen Hatmaker // This one I found in our church lending library one day. It has some great nuggets in it, but I had a hard time with her style of writing. If you enjoy super sarcastic and lots of extra funny words and you love Jesus with your whole heart, this book is definitely for you.

TONIO READ the following:

1) The New City Catechism Devotional by Timothy Keller

2) The Foundation Trilogy by Isaac Asimov

3) Prayer: How Praying Together Shapes the Church by John Onwuchekwa

4) A Tale of Three Kings by Gene Edwards // Our common read this year.

5) Reflections of the Psalms by C.S. Lewis

6) The 6 Needs of Every Child by Amy and Jeffrey Olrick PhD // I read this one last year.

7) Bear Attacks, Dog Teams and a Sinking Boat by Mike Sloan // Tonio’s uncle in Alaska.

8) The Life of Joy and Peace by Martyn Lloyd-Jones // While teaching through Philippians.

Reading for me has always been a challenge, so reading 13 books in a year is a huge accomplishment. I realized I read a lot of non-fiction. Perhaps next year I will try to balance that out. If you’re curious about last year’s list, you can see it HERE.

I hope you have enjoyed your books this year!

Love Linz
